  Check software
Just as computers themselves continually increase in power and complexity, so to does the software for them also becomes more and more advanced. Even if one discounts the development of new programs, patches and updated versions can often fix problems or add new functionality to your current software. Thus, it often pays to take an occasional look at the websites of your most commonly used programs, to check for patches or updated versions. These can usually be found in the "Support" section of the website. To determine if you need to install a patch, compare the version number of your software (Commonly found in the "About" entry on the basic toolbar (The one with File, Edit, et cetera). If your program's number is lower than that of the patch, you may need to install it, although one should always look at the instructions that come with the patch first. If your software is too old, or they have made an entirely different revision of the software, then you may have to buy the new version in order to upgrade. Some companies sell "Upgrade Versions" of software, which cost less than the new full version, and allow one to upgrade from a previous version to the current one.
