Our Soft Plastics Recycling Process

We are partnered with APR Plastics to bring soft plastics recycling to your council.

How it works

  1. Book a pickup or join a regular plan on our website or the RecycleSmart app.

  2. Pack your soft plastics (and other hard-to-recycle things) in any regular shopping bag roughly the size of 40x40x20cm.

  3. A friendly local driver will collect your recyclables and drop them off at a consolidation point in your council.

What happens to the soft plastics?

  • The soft plastics are baled and transported to APR Plastics in Victoria where it will be processed.

  • At the facility, the soft plastics are shredded so it can be consistently fed into the process.

  • Shredded plastics are then fed into the Biofabrik WASTX pyrolysis machine.

  • The uniquely designed corkscrew conveyor transports the plastic material into the reactor and breaks it down at high temperatures. The plastic is then converted into feedstock oil.

  • The feedstock oil will be sent to VIVA Energy’s Geelong refinery for further processing. It will be turned into resin, which enables it to be turned back into food grade plastic packaging again.
